Second day in Chicago we joined members of USW Local 7999 at Sloan Valve for a plant gate rally. The company took an aggressive stance at the bargaining table, demanding deep cuts from workers. The local fought back and was able to bring out more than 150 members almost the entire day shift and were joined by organizers from the Summer of Solidarity Tour and members of other USW Locals from the area for the plant gate rally.
In the afternoon, the tour went to New Era Window to meet with UE Local 1110. New Era Windows, formerly known as Republic Window and Doors, it was the site of a plant takeover in 2008 after management announced plans to shutter the plant and refused to pay workers for accrued sick and vacation time or provide WARN Act notice. The plant was later re-opened under new management and in 2012 the workers took ownership of the factory and incorporated as a worker-run cooperative.
