Kaiser Permanente Informational Picket

Yesterday our brothers and sisters who work at Kaiser in Fontana had an informational picket wanting Kaiser to respect their contract.

We went to show our support, the rain could not stop the movement and the strength that we have for respect in the workplace.

Any updates they have we will continue to post.

Candlelight Vigil Challenges Angelus Can Plant Closure

 

Angelus Can is closing its Los Angeles plant.  Even though the plant is profitable, the Company has decided to move production to a non-Union plant in Ohio.

 

On December 12, 2012, the laid off members of USW Local 8957 gathered at the Los Angeles plant at the same time as a gathering was held at Corporate HQ in Saint Louis.  Retiree Doug Marshall described these vigils: “The vigil began at 3:00 PM, the time the office people usually leave. However Angelus sent everybody home and hour early that day so the place was empty. A lot of our members were there as well as our retirees, Steelworkers from several other Locals and a Maywood City Councilman. A similar vigil was held outside Barry Wehmiller headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri. That vigil was lead by Randy Sullivan and Roger Herrera and a bunch of St. Louis Steelworkers made up a good crowd.”

 

Local 8957 and the International Union are leading a campaign to attempt to reverse the closure.  There will be more events to support these workers.  Watch this website for more information.

USW Local 675 Cooperativistas Christmas Party

After our annual Children’s Christmas Party the cooperativistas will be having a christmas party in the evening.

Protest at Costco for Palermo Workers

 

This past Wednesday we protested at Costco in Los Feliz in support of the workers at Palermo pizza.

We ask that you not buy the frozen pizza in Costco to support our brothers and sisters who are on strike at Palermo Pizza.

 

 

 

Candlelight Vigil

 

 

Barry-Wehmiller owners of Angelus Sanitary Can Machine Company is closing the facility in Vernon, CA and moving the operation to a Non-Union facility in Akron, OH. All of the bargaining unit employees were laid off November 2^nd and issued a WARN Notice. The facility is currently being operated by management and secretaries. LU 8957 has been members of the Steelworkers for over 70 years and needs your help.

 

On Wednesday, December 12^th from 3:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. there will be a “Candlelight Vigil” held at the plant and we invite you and your families and members to participate. There will be a Candlelight Vigil also held at the same time in St. Louis, MO at the company’s headquarters.

2013 Free Income Tax Preparation and Family Services Initiative

Dear Union Leader:

 

I was following up on a letter sent to your attention from State Board of Equalization Chairman Jerome Horton.  The letter requests your Union’s partnership in our 2013 Free Income Tax Preparation and Family Services initiative as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. 

 

This initiative was a huge success last year as we were able to capture $3.7 million in federal tax credits by helping thousands of Californians file their tax returns.  In addition to the tax preparation, we provide qualifying participants the opportunity to apply and receive much needed family services.

 

This year qualified taxpayers who earn less than $51,000 may be eligible to receive a maximum of $5,891 in Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).  The EITC is a refundable credit, and unlike other available tax credits; the EITC is a direct cash payment which is added to any refund due to qualifying individuals.  For example, if 1,000 of your constituents qualified for the maximum allowable EITC, $5.8 million of additional residual income will flow into your local economy.

 

As a partner, we ask that you authorize the use of your union’s name on event brochures and other promotional material. We would also ask that you communicate with your membership (through email, your website, your newsletter and/or any other form of communication) and make them aware of this valuable resource.
